Don’t Look Up, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence and Meryl Streep, received a limited theatrical release this week, and the reviews are in.
The film follows grad student Kate Dibiasky (Lawrence) and Dr. Randall Mindy (DiCaprio) as they discover a comet within Earth’s solar system, and as they share this information, they realise: no on cares.
Despite the star-studded cast, the new release has only received a 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, although audiences rate it at a higher 80%.
Metacritic gave it 52/100 based on critics ratings, and the audience gave the film “generally unfavourable reviews”, as it came in at 2.4 stars out of five.
The Hollywood Reporter reviewed the film, saying: “No doubt some will find its easy digs at the indifference of a shamelessly self-dealing White House administration, the greed of a monolithic tech company, the vapidity of upbeat morning television and the outsize influence of social media quite hilarious. I did not.”
Variety expresses that “Unless you hate the characters as much as I do, in which case, stick around through the credits for two bonus epilogues, which appear right around the point Netflix auto-directs you to…something that makes you wish an asteroid would just wipe us all out already. You know what they say about cockroaches’ capacity to survive the end of the world, right?”
Although most reviews rated the film highly, usually four out of five stars, the words written express one thing: the film lacks depth, going for easy jokes and random Ariana Grande appearances over dealing with the issues in a more intricate and serious way.
