Producer Tyler Perry has confirmed that work on the script for Sister Act 3 is fully underway.
Earlier in the year, Disney confirmed that Tim Federle had been enlisted to direct the upcoming film. Perry was announced to produce, alongside Tom Leonardis.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Perry gave an update on the film’s progress – set to be penned by Madhuri Shekar.
“The script is being written,” he said. “And I am the producer on it – not directing. We brought on an incredible director and Whoopi’s really excited. I think this is just what the country needs. We need that feel-good moment in the movies where you go, ‘Oh my god, I left there singing.’ That’s my hope.”
The original Sister Act, directed by Emile Ardolino, debuted in 1992. It received huge critical and commercial success, grossing around $231 million and becoming one of the most successful comedy films of the 1990s. Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit was released a year later, but received a significantly colder reception.
Whoopi Goldberg starred in both instalments as Deloris Van Cartier, a.k.a. Sister Mary Clarence. She will reprise her role in the upcoming sequel.
