A Dame Traveler’s Guide to Lower Manhattan

A Dame Traveler’s Guide to Lower Manhattan

When most people visit New York City, they head straight to Midtown- Times Square, Central Park, the works. But in our opinion, real New York is resides in Lower Manhattan. Expand your horizons and explore this beautiful part of the city where you will truly feel like you’re walking on a movie set, minus the hoards of tourists and people dressed up as Mickey Mouse trying to con you into taking a photo!

When to Visit Lower Manhattan?

New York City offers all four seasons in all of their glory so it depends on what type of vibe you’re looking for. The holiday season is magic, seeing all of the brownstones lit up and walking down sidewalks lined with the scent of pine from the Christmas trees from upstate. You truly get that local feel. Spring is beautiful with the gorgeous cherry blossoms in full bloom in the months of April / May in places like Washington Square Park, Summer is obviously a fun time but it gets very hot and humid in the city so beware! Now, with outdoor dining, summer is even more of a blast with the incredible energy that makes you feel like you’re in Europe. And last but not least, autumn in New York is truly my favorite. It’s incredibly cozy and a blast around Halloween time with the crazy costumes and Halloween decor all over the city.

Getting to Downtown Manhattan

The best way to get around the city is by MTA subway. You can now pay with Apple pay at the kiosk instead of trying to figure out how to load the MTA card, let alone how to swipe it correctly! Of course, there are also cabs. I recommend a cab over a ride share to help support our local cabbies.

Where to Stay?

I love the Chelsea neighborhood with its chic vibe, art galleries, incredible restaurants and so many fun things to do such as walk the High Line, lunch at Chelsea Market, close proximity to Hudson Yards, Meatpacking District and more. Hotel Selina Chelsea is the perfect place to stay in the midst of all the action.

The High Line

This 1.45 mile-long elevated linear park greenway and trail is made on a former New York Central Railroad trail. If you want an escape from the busy life of Manhattan, this is the place for that. You are still in the heart of the city, yet separated from the traffic and crowds. It also offers stunning views of historic buildings, artwork, and greenery.
