Broadly speaking, Americans tend to be unfamiliar with what it truly means to travel in the middle east. We often think of deserts, donkeys, and dinar; and while that’s accurate, there is a vast and wild land so uniquely its own and waiting to be discovered by the few willing to make the daunting, sandy journey!
Jordan is the ultimate introduction to the middle east. The country offers the same culture, attractions, and climate as its less visited neighbours, with more liberal idealism, consideration for western tourists, and safety and security.
With once in a lifetime sights like the bustling city of Amman, the rose red city of Petra, the ancient ruins of Jerash, and the desert sands of Wadi Rum, it’s no surprise so many movies have been filmed over this stunning landscape!
Nicknamed “The Rose Red City” after its red-ish sand color used to construct the ancient architecture, Petra is one of the most monumental must- sees in Jordan. Its worth the 45- minute hike past the treasury and all the vendors along the way to see the infamous monastery. Not to mention, what a photo op!
Wadi Rum is a protected desert region in south Jordan where visitors who are willing to brave the lengthy journey are rewarded with camel rides, glamping in luxury bubble tents, and nomadic Bedouin camp experiences. Wadi Rum is also infamously known for its close resemblance to Mars, making it a hot shooting location for big name movies like The Martian and Transformers. Pro tip- don’t skip sunrise and sunset!
